Shazam’s Big DC Character Cameo Almost Turned Out Very Different

In the world of the DC cinematic universe, Shazam is definitely pretty sparse so far as connections to different DC heroes. There’s no main climactic cameo like Wonder Woman displaying up in Batman v. Superman, and no heroic team-up just like the Justice League (except you depend the big twist within the climactic combat with Dr. Sivana).

There is one DC character cameo, and it is performed completely for laughs: on the finish of the film, when Superman exhibits up throughout Freddy’s lunch hour at college. It’s payoff for the bit earlier the place Freddy bragged that he is pals with Shazam, and seeing Clark Kent from the torso down solely by some means makes it even funnier, because it lets us concentrate on the opposite characters’ reactions.

But the scene virtually turned out very in a different way, Shazam director David Sandberg advised GameSpot: They initially tried to get Superman actor Henry Cavill to look in full on the finish of the film.

“It was originally written as a scene where he sits down and he talks to the kids a little bit and kind of ends with Freddy going, ‘I have so many questions,'” Sandberg mentioned. There was even dialogue written–“They sort of joked around…something about aliens or something,” Sandberg struggled to recall.

“It wasn’t actually that fun, which is why this is so much better,” the director continued.

Sandberg mentioned Cavill’s cameo did not work out for scheduling causes. “We could only be in that school in Toronto for a certain date, and we just couldn’t work it out,” he mentioned. But he nonetheless wished to have the payoff that Superman’s look creates, so he brainstormed different methods to do the scene. “We tried shooting it the way we did, and I thought it worked great,” the director mentioned. “It seemed actually funnier than the scene we had written, because you see him come in, you see Freddy’s great reaction, and you just hard cut to the end credits. It just makes me laugh, you know? So, in some ways, it kind of worked out for the best.”

“But it would have been great to actually work with Henry Cavill,” Sandberg added.

Cavill’s half within the bigger DC universe has been up within the air these days, as rumors have mounted since final 12 months that the actor won’t return to the role of Superman. We’ve but to get a concrete reply on that, and we’ll seemingly by no means know for certain whether or not these tensions had an impact on Cavill’s would-be Shazam cameo. In the tip, we discover it straightforward to agree with Sandberg’s evaluation: The scene, and the film as a complete, turned out simply fantastic.

Shazam is in theaters now. The newest DC film had a successful opening weekend, and there is already plenty of buzz a couple of sequel. Read our full review here.
